Although Mosaic is designed to minimise the effort required to resize windows, for some people it may be undesirable for the layouts to pop up when a window is dragged. With the default settings you can prevent the layouts appearing simply by holding ⌥ whilst dragging, which will hide the layouts or prevent them appearing.
However, if you prefer that the layouts only appear when you request them to there are several options available:
- Configure so that holding ⌥ is required to show the layouts while dragging
- Configure so that when dragging layouts only appear after you drag the cursor to the top of the screen
- Use the Click & Select mode
- Disable "Drag & Drop" from the app menu
I will detail each one below.
Show Layouts On Drag Window Holding ⌥
You can apply this mode by:
- Click the status menu icon for Mosaic
- In the "Drag & Drop" section of the app menu click the "Show Layouts" submenu item
- Select "On Drag Window Holding ⌥"
Now when you drag a window the layouts will not be displayed, unless you are holding ⌥ whilst dragging.
Show Layouts On Drag To Screen Top
To change to this mode:
- Click the status menu icon for Mosaic
- In the "Drag & Drop" section of the app menu click the "Show Layouts" submenu item
- Select "On Drag To Screen Top"
With this mode activated the layouts will not appear when you start dragging a window, however if you drag the window to the top of the screen so the cursor is over the status bar, the layouts will be displayed. This mode works particularly well with the Docked layout view.
Click & Select Mode
Click and select is a different way of activating layouts for people who do not like the drag & drop method, or perhaps prefer to initiate the process using a shortcut key. Click & Select applies a layout or Quick Layout to the active application window. You enter Click & Select mode by pressing a shortcut key which displays a panel with an image of the window to which the layout will be applied, and the layouts that can be applied along with a Quick Layout grid. You apply the layout by clicking on the one you wish to apply, or you can alternatively use the quick layout grid to define a one time layout to apply to this window. By default the shortcut key is ⌥⇧⌘L however this can be configured in the Behaviours tab of the Mosaic preferences.
To use Click & Select:
- Press the configured shortcut (by default ⌥⇧⌘L)
- Click the layout you wish to apply to the previewed window or drag on the Quick Layout grid
Disable "Drag & Drop" from the app menu
If you are using Click & Select or another mode and do not wish for the layouts to appear when you drag at all, you can simply disable the Drag & Drop detection:
- Click the status menu icon for Mosaic
- In the "Drag & Drop" section untick the Enabled option
